Capturing Aurora and Fireball over the Lake by Lisa Wolfe

Introduction

There’s something captivating about Lisa’s photography. Her landscapes are bold. Her night skies are full of wonder. And her colors? Always rich and full of life.

We’ve shared conversations about Sony cameras and the little technical details that bring an image to life. Over the years, I’ve seen her skills grow with every frame. With the Sony A7RV in her hands, she’s truly in her element. I’m excited to feature one of her photos today.

The Story Behind the Photo

It was my second night in a row chasing the Aurora. The night before didn’t go as planned—but persistence pays off.

I stayed out for hours, determined to make it count. This time, I decided to try something new: my very first time-lapse with the Sony A7RV.

And then it happened. Not only did I catch the Aurora dancing across the sky, I captured a fireball blazing through the frame.

What a night to remember!

Creative Choices

I decided to try a time lapse, shooting every couple of seconds, which thankfully I did because otherwise I wouldn’t have been fast enough to fire off a single shot to capture the fireball.

The built-in interval shooting on the Sony A7R V made the setup simple, and I used my phone as a remote trigger to avoid touching the camera and introducing any shake. The fully articulating screen helped me frame the scene just right in the dark.

Paired with the Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 GM lens, the camera pulled in plenty of light to clearly capture both the Aurora and the fireball, a magical moment I’ll never forget.

About Lisa Wolfe

Hello, I’m Lisa, a landscape photographer based on the east coast of the United States.

I find joy in the quiet moments that nature offers, those peaceful scenes that speak straight to the soul. I’m especially drawn to the night sky and the timeless beauty of waterfalls.

Alongside photography, I also love writing poems inspired by my images. Through words, I try to capture not only the visual beauty, but also the emotions and stillness of each moment.

Equipment Used

The Sony a7RV is actually the one I recently won in the Sony Alpha giveaway! It’s fantastic, and I absolutely love it!

The 61MP sensor gives me plenty of room to crop when needed. I also really appreciate the fully articulating screen, it’s a game changer.

Also, I love being able to use my phone as a remote trigger, and the ability to set up longer exposures, like 90 seconds, without needing an intervalometer is incredibly helpful for astrophotography.

The Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 GM lens is amazing for night shots too, with its wide f1.8 aperture.

It allows more light to enter into the sensor, giving me more flexibility in my settings so I don’t have to push the ISO too high, which would introduce more noise.

The combination of the Sony camera and lens truly makes for the perfect astro setup!
