Learn Photography by Starting a Project

Photography is an ongoing process of learning, observing, and creating.

The best way to learn isn’t only to read about photography or watch tutorials. It’s to go out and make photographs.

Start a project -> Study -> Plan -> Practice -> Edit -> Create -> Reflect.

I use these projects to develop my own photography and share what I learn along the way. You can follow the same projects, create your own work, and build a body of work over time.

1. Study

Look at photography, photographers, books, films, and ideas to develop your visual understanding and find inspiration.

2. Plan

Decide what you want to explore, why you’re doing it, and give yourself a clear subject, question, or set of constraints.

3. Practice

Go out and make photographs. Experiment, make mistakes, observe, and learn through actually using your camera.

4. Edit

Review everything you’ve photographed and decide what stays, what goes, and which images work together.

5. Create

Turn your selected photographs into a finished body of work. (i.e. A photo essay, series, zine, exhibition, book, or other final form).

6. Reflect

Look back at the project. What did you discover? What worked? What didn’t? What would you change next time?
